Misty Salazar, Admissions Advisor

Tell me a little bit about your academic background.

I have my undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Adams State University. I also have an MBA from University of Phoenix.

I’m a huge advocate for higher education. I feel like education is the one thing that no one can ever take away from you. Whether you are getting your bachelor’s degree or you’re getting your master’s degree or a second master’s degree, it’s never a waste. I look at the opportunities higher education has afforded me and I wouldn’t be here today without it.

What is your advice for students considering applying to University of Saint Mary?

My top three tips for students throughout the admissions process are:

  1. Don’t be afraid to take the first step.
  2. Know you will have a level of support here you’ve probably never experienced in a school.
  3. Don’t be afraid to share your fears with your program manager.

Tell me what you like about one of our online programs.

I connect really well with our Leadership and Organizational Health concentration in the MBA program. After reading the book “The Advantage” by Patrick Lencioni- I feel one aspect organizations don’t seem to pay much attention to is the human element, the human capital. If you don’t pay attention to that nor invest in the human capital, then your business will be mediocre. When people are happy to come to work, they do a good job. I think the specialization really helps you understand recognition, clarity, communication and having a sense of vulnerability with your peers is important. These elements are the only way to build a basic instinct level of trust. Once you have trust, the team can continue to thrive but without it you’ll be spinning your wheels.

What are a couple of your favorite things about USM?

I like that USM is very competitively priced in comparison to some other schools. We’ve been recognized US News and World Report and the Princeton Review which speaks to the academic commitment of the University.

Anything else you’d like to share?

I encourage anyone who is looking to go back to school to give it good consideration because all great things in life are when risks are taken to push you past your comfort zone.
